Walden; or, Life in the Woods

The iPhone PhotoSynth app is a fantastic tool for capturing 360° panoramas. If you haven’t seen PhotoSynth before then take a look at my previous article which includes a video showing it in all it’s glory.

Walden Pond

I was passing through Concord, Massachusetts a few weeks ago and took a break by stopping off at Walden Pond. The book Walden by Henry David Thoreau is one of my favorites. I first read it after watching the movie Dead Poets Society and loved it. You can read the reviews on Amazon here.

This is a PhotoSynth embedded in to the Photography Incyder page. You can use your mouse to rotate the view through a full 360°. Just click on a place and drag it somewhere to uncover more of the photography.

Walden

If you know the book then this is said to be the exact location of Thoreau’s cabin in the woods. It has been marked out in the ground with stone pillars. I guess Walden is most famous for the following quote:

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life…

How to Pronounce Thoreau

A mystery was solved for me that day: how do you pronounce Thoreau? The guy behind the counter in the gift shop told me that there is evidence to suggest that Thoreau himself pronounced it as ‘thorough’ (th-row).

Dead Poets Society

I still watch this film every now and again. The message of ‘seizing the day’ because we are all ‘food for worms’ leads to some unexpected occurrences in the film but can be a source of motivation for the likes of me. I don’t know how easy it is to find now but you might be able to pick up a copy on Amazon.
