Top 5 Books to Improve Your Photography

A big Thank You for Sharing this page - it really does help us :)

I am regularly asked about books that I’d recommend to a keen photographer. I’ve read hundreds — so it’s a difficult call. But, after giving it a lot of thought, here are my Top 5.

I’ll warn you now, #4 isn’t an easy read — but it will help you grow as a photographer.

And #5 will surprise you – it doesn’t mention photography at all but it’s the one book I wish I’d had when I left for college to study photography. I think that reading it could make the difference between you being an amazing photographer and failing to ever take a decent picture in your life.

#1 Understanding Exposure (3rd Edition)

Book Cover: Understanding Exposure by Bryan PetersonThere are very few books that come as highly recommended as Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. With over 350,000 copies sold and more than 454 ★★★★★ (5 Star) Amazon Customer Reviews this book is sure to be a valuable addition to any photographer’s library.

In this (revised and updated) 3rd edition Bryan’s easy to understand writing style and practical approach to understanding exposure continues to shine through. It’s hard to find a book that better explains the concepts for beginners and leads the reader through the more advanced understanding that photographers need to get their exposures right.

In a five star review on Amazon a very satisfied reader said:

In the first 30 pages, I’ve gotten more information on how to use my camera settings to take creative photographs than the dozens of books I’ve read, or all the courses and seminars I’ve taken. And all for less than $20! (click here to see the full review)
